Norfolk Environmental Credits Ltd

Norfolk Environmental Credits Ltd (NEC) is a not-for-profit joint venture formed in early 2023 by five Norfolk-based local authorities: Breckland Council, Broadland District Council, North Norfolk District Council, Norwich City Council, and South Norfolk Council. Based in Norwich, NEC was established to help unlock sustainable housing development across the region by providing access to environmental mitigation schemes.

NEC plays a leading role in addressing the challenge of Nutrient Neutrality. Since January 2024, the organisation has been securing and trading nutrient credits across the Bure, Wensum, and Yare River catchments—enabling housing growth while protecting Norfolk’s natural environment. The organisation currently has a core team of three staff and is actively expanding.
