Q&A

What’s the best part of the work you do?

I’m very lucky to help people resolve their difficult situations with HMRC, so that they can move on and focus on the things that matter most in their lives. That work is always interesting and endlessly varied because all of those people are different and have their own unique circumstances.

What’s the biggest mistake people make when they first receive a letter from HMRC about an investigation?

Too often, people who feel they have nothing to hide decide against professional advice and try to handle an HMRC investigation themselves. This usually makes things harder. HMRC’s role is to establish the correct tax position, and its investigations can be thorough, so anything ambiguous in what a taxpayer says or does may be used to support a higher assessment. Specialist advisors, like our team, still work within the facts as they stand. But understanding the legal and procedural framework HMRC operates within makes a real difference to what HMRC can tax, how far back it can go, and the level of any penalties.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I get more than enough stimulation helping people work through their difficulties with HMRC, so outside of work I’m content to focus on good health and relaxation.  I swim, jog and cycle as well as enjoying life’s simple pleasures like gardening, DIY, cooking, good wine and going on road trips across the UK and Europe.
