Greg’s professional experience

Greg Mayne Author bio Greg started out his career working for HM Customs and Excise (known today as HMRC) where he gained valuable experience as an assurance officer before specialising in debt recovery, registration and insolvency. Published content

An experienced advisor to domestic and international clients, Greg’s specialist topics include VAT on commercial activities, property transactions and business structures; international VAT and import duty; and negotiations with customs and tax authorities. Utilising the breadth of his practiced knowledge, Greg is frequently called upon to provide VAT training both through his written content and to his peers through face-to-face training and working groups. He was instrumental in establishing an International VAT Representative network, a working group of international VAT experts who come together to host conferences, engage in joint CPD and knowledge sharing, and frequently cross-refer work between one another to ensure their clients receive the highest quality, tailored support for their needs.

Greg is regularly involved in content that seeks to decode the often complex applications of VAT for business owners and considers how economic and political changes, particularly in the case of changes to international trading regulations or conditions, may impact the VAT position for businesses with overseas trade.

Publications, coverage and speaker events

Greg’s commentary on the impact that the so-called ‘pasty tax’ that former Chancellor George Osborne introduced in 2012 would have on already struggling business owners received broad coverage including The Independent, Daily Mail, the Huffington Post and relevant industry press, including Caterer magazine.  He has also been called upon to provide sector specific VAT counsel, including a feature in Farmers Weekly where he responded to their audiences’ farming related VAT queries.

A specialist in international VAT advice, Greg has featured in a series of Brexit webinars in the lead up to and following the UK’s exit from the EU to support business owners in understanding the likely VAT and duty changes that would follow. He has also been a speaker at both UK and international events, including a talk on the domestic reverse charge at the Kent Construction Forum and later this year he will be doing a key note taking on international VAT and indirect tax at the IAPA conference in Amsterdam.
