International tax compliance

Helping you consider the UK tax implications

International market expansion advice

Whether you are moving to the UK for a temporary period as a ‘business visitor’ (non-resident but working for a UK company), intending to become resident here for the longer term, or returning to the UK after a period of time away – if you are a taxpayer it’s important to carefully consider the UK tax implications.

The UK has a highly evolved and relatively complex taxation system, but prudent planning can minimise your tax exposure. It can also ensure that you do not fall foul of the HMRC penalty regime.

There are various aspects that are important to consider, including:

  • Securing expert residence and domicile advice, as well as any necessary pre-immigration planning, so that the correct UK tax regime is applied to your situation.
  • If you are a resident of one of the many countries that have a double taxation agreement with the UK, you may be able to claim double tax treaty relief so that tax is not paid on the same income or gains twice. How that relief is applied will depend on the type of income or gain, as well as your circumstances, and the agreement between the UK and your country of residence.
  • Ensuring that you comply with all other aspects of the relevant tax regime (both in the UK and in your ‘home’ country), and that you have claimed the available credits or reliefs.
  • If you are relocating to the UK, you may qualify for Temporary Workplace Relief (for short-term relocations up to 24 months), or Relocation Allowance.
  • Identifying the most efficient way to structure your investments, to ensure that you retain maximum flexibility over any assets and their exposure to tax (both UK and non-UK).
  • Ensuring that you are making contributions into a recognised pension plan in the most tax-efficient manner.

Understanding and complying with the tax system in the country you are moving to, and keeping up-to-date with your tax commitments in your ‘home’ country, is essential to ensure that your tax payments are as efficient as possible and that you meet all legal requirements.
